Louis Waterhouse,

”We are constantly working to provide the best calibration services in New England.”

In 2010, Louis started L.A.W. Calibration in the basement of his home after he was approached by an out-of-state calibration laboratory to work for them. Louis did some research and found that Maine was significantly lacking in several areas of calibration services and providers. After forming L.A.W. and purchasing a few standards, Louis joined the Manufacturers Association of Maine and was contacted by another member to calibrate their equipment. “I was surprised to see just how few capabilities were being offered by other laboratories.”

help local businesses

I saw an opportunity to use my skills and knowledge

“I saw an opportunity to use my skills and knowledge to help local businesses reduce their downtime and overall calibration costs.”

It took less than six months for Louis to outgrow his basement and move into a six hundred square foot space in Biddeford.

“I was struggling to keep up with the amount of equipment that was starting to come in and my basement just wasn’t enough space.” After two years of operating out of his first commercial location, L.A.W. had once again outgrown its space. “It was kind of funny. When I first moved in, I thought to myself that I’d never need this much space. I had an office, a break area, two small labs, and a small storage area. In less than two years’ time and a lot of renovating, all I had was lab space, and my “office” was my laptop on a workbench.” Louis moved L.A.W. to a 1500 sqft location in Biddeford and hired its first full-time technician soon after.

In 2014, Louis was the Maine SCORE recipient of the Veteran Owned Business of the Year. Having doubled the growth and revenue in the first four years of existence, L.A.W. was working its way towards being a well-established calibration laboratory. In 2017, Louis was approached by the owners of QC Services and they asked if he was interested in purchasing their laboratory. On June 30th, 2017, QC Services was purchased by L.A.W. Calibration, creating Maine’s largest ISO/IEC 17025-2017 Accredited Calibration laboratory. In 2018, in conjunction with the SBA Small Business Week Event, Louis was honored with the Veteran Owned Small Business of the Year of the state of Maine. Louis has continued to grow and improve L.A.W.’s capabilities and outreach.

This year, L.A.W. Calibration has grown to include customers all over the United States to include Skandia and SpaceX.
